Mia Lobel M.Ed. has made the transformation and empowerment of the human spirit
through self-awareness her main focus. A visionary who is firmly grounded in
the practical needs of life, she has embraced education as her passion and as
a vehicle to enhance human experience in all its diversity.
Mia is a psychotherapist in private practice, a professor at Concordia University and a Group Dynamics consultant. She believes that learning occurs from the inside-out and in relationship with others. As an educator, and as a community developer, Mia's 35 year work experience includes intrapersonal empowerment, boundary management, stress management, organizational change, diversity training, community building, group diagnosis and intervention, crisis management, negotiation, mediation, and conflict resolution. Course topics developed and delivered by Mia at Concordia University ranged from Interpersonal Communications and Relationships, to Group Dynamics, to Counseling and Social Problems. Conversant in English, French, Hungarian, Romanian and Hebrew, Mia is the co-founder, President, and CEO of Learningbydoing, Inc. The design of the LBD LearningRoom, the LBD MeetingRoom, and the LBD Offices is the synergy of Mia's online community experience, her therapeutic experience and her “learning-by-doing” teaching/training experience, based on the experiential learning model, both face to face and online. Over the past five years Mia has developed a specific online environment to facilitate affirmative human interaction. Her research indicates that in this environment, and because of the basic technology, people working with their peers are motivated to perform at an interpersonal level they could not achieve in a traditional classroom environment. He is currently an Engineering Physicist at Stanford Linear Accelerator Center, Stanford, California, and an international consultant. Mike has been online for a very long time and has experience working with many analog and digital collaboration tools. Mike has telecommuted from Montreal, Quebec to Stanford, California for over five years from 2001 to 2006. "I believe the online working environment will transform how we do business in the global economy. How well we master it, how well we understand the profound paradigm shifts, will determine how well we may function in this emerging new world. "Because LBD's unique environment levels the playing field, Goffman's turn-taking unit of communication is the slow form of the past. Non-turn-taking, hyper-parallel, what-ever-you-want-to-call-it multi-personal is the future. People meet people from the inside out, and face-to-face non-verbal communication skills transform into textual re-marks with timing. In the LBD text and graphics environment, meetings take place faster and more efficiently online than they do face-to-face." John Gull is a founding partner in Learningbydoing, Inc. He is the software developer for Learningbydoing's real-time applications, and creator of LBD's Learning Room, eClassroom, Meeting Room, and Offices. For over fifteen years, John has perfected the kernel of these applications in various multi-user environments on the internet. |

Her involvement in school life began in 1992, starting as the secretary of her children’s elementary school parent’s committee. In 1998 she was elected commissioner of the newly formed Sir Wilfrid Laurier School Board, and upon re-election in 1993 was elected Vice-Chairman. She sits on five standing committees, including the Special Education Advisory Committee. In addition, she is on the executive of the Quebec English School Boards Association, chairing the program committee for the 2006 Canadian School Board’s Association Annual General Meeting and Conference. In the past, Carolyn has been on the Advisory Board for English Education, was in the Scouting movement for 10 years, and was on her church’s Parish Council. Languages: English, French Carolyn can be reached at: ccuriale@hotmail.com As a returning mature student, I was worried about how my age would affect my interpersonal relationships. The interactive online virtual classroom enveloped me, stimulated me, inspired me. I felt surrounded by my peers, all of us able to discuss and relate to each other while simultaneously our teachers presented ideas, concepts and activities in attractive flowing blend of graphics and text, that embraced and welcomed me to the university while far away in my home! The opportunity to peer facilitate the following year allowed me another perspective on the online learning, observing how quickly new students became adept at the technology, how fast their learning curve was, in only a few weeks becoming proficient in the use of the site, posting their photos, using the whiteboard and ultimately creating their final presentation. Three years later and I continue to take whatever classes that are offered in the Learningbydoing format as I finish my BA in Leisure with a special interest on older adults and life long learning. I am doing an independent study on the question of successful aging and what part creativity plays in it and intend to do field research on play and its place in older adults lives. As a TA for Leadership in Small Groups I can compare the nature of f2f group work to the technological environment online. I notice that less extroverted individuals appear more comfortable with sharing online, while the accessibility of the automatically recorded data by the archives off sets the lack of body and vocal tone cues we count on in interpersonal interactions. As increasing numbers of people work from home, en route or even from far off destinations, clear, user-friendly, efficient online programs such as Learningbydoing will be needed to maintain continual interactive teaching and training of staff. My vision is of a world wide system of accessible online interactive forums for employees and employers, students and teachers, retired older adults, even children, within which a constantly evolving synchronous exchange and sharing of ideas changes the shape and scope of education.
